Do Essential Oils Help Menopausal Symptoms?
Menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and irritability, can be quite disruptive for many women as they go through this stage of their lives. With the public’s knowledge about negative side effects of artificial hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on the rise, many women are looking for more natural ways to help alleviate some of these troubling symptoms.
According to scientific studies, HRT carries a particular set of dangers, such as increasing a woman’s risk of stroke, heart attack, blood clots and breast cancer. Overall, the studies suggest that the benefits of HRT outweigh the risk, but many women understandably do not want to take these chances with their health and are turning to essential oils instead.
Essentials oils, while anecdotally effective for many of the symptoms of menopause, have not been subjected to the same volume of rigorous research studies as HRT, primarily because the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture replacement hormones have no financial interest in backing these types of research studies. But this is beginning to change as women are demanding safer and more natural alternatives to hormone replacement therapy.
These five essential oils are the ones I personally recommend for my clients who are struggling with the symptoms of menopause:
1 – Clary Sage – This wonderful oil can be very effective in alleviating hot flashes. A few drops placed on a tissue or on a beautiful aromatherapy stone bracelet and breathed in, can work wonders.
2 – Peppermint – This energizing and cooling oil may help with hot flashes but can also be useful during perimenopause if you are experience cramping. Placed on a tissue or diffused in an aromatherapy diffuser, cheerful peppermint will also lift your mood.
3 – Lavender – Many women experience serious problems sleeping during menopause and this is where lavender shines. Lovely lavender promotes relaxation and can also help improve the quality of your sleep as well as help with anxiety.
4 – Basil – This fragrant oil is purported to increase estrogen levels and works also to elevate your mood, always a good thing if you are trying to cope with menopausal symptoms!
5 – Neroli – This essential oil is a popular choice for menopause symptoms. A 2014 study of postmenopausal women showed a decrease in systolic blood pressure and a decrease in symptoms.
Of course, there are other essential oils that are of benefit to menopausal women but these are the most popular. A consultation with your professional aromatherapist can help determine which oil or combination of oils is right for you.
