Are Reiki Treatments Safe?
In my introduction to Reiki article, I explained how Reiki is a healing, stress reduction and relaxation technique which works with your body’s energy field. This extremely simple, but powerful method was developed in Japan in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui. Since its founding, thousands of people all over the world have experienced its enormous benefits.
How Safe Is Reiki?
But just how safe are Reiki treatments? And should you have particular concerns if you have been diagnosed with a chronic condition just as diabetes or high blood pressure? Can you undergo a Reiki treatment if you are pregnant? All of these are great questions so let’s address them head on.
First of all, be assured there are no known contraindications for Reiki treatment, no matter if you are in perfect health or have been diagnosed with a chronic condition. Reiki is very safe, as the practitioner’s hands touch your body very lightly and unlike massage therapy or acupressure, no bodily force of any kind is involved. Reiki can even be performed without the practitioner’s hands touching your body!
Reiki: A Couple of Concerns
Having said that, as a practitioner, I want to address a couple of concerns:
I want to stress that if you are having symptoms of a medical problem, you should absolutely not rely on your Reiki practitioner to make a diagnosis, unless of course she or he is a licensed medical provider. It’s important to understand that Reiki is meant to complement medical treatment, not replace it.
So just because you may have regular Reiki treatments does not mean you should avoid having medical tests or seeing your medical provider. But because it’s so common for people who are dealing with chronic illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure to be on medications, you don’t have to worry at all about any interactions, as Reiki uses no herbal medicines or requires you to ingest any supplements of any kind.
Reiki is safe in pregnancy. In fact, Reiki treatments can help to induce deep relaxation and can facilitate stress reduction, which can lead to an easier labor.
Reiki: Symptom Intensification
Occasionally, Reiki can cause a temporary intensification of symptoms but these should quickly resolve and should not rise to the level of real discomfort. Most practitioners see this intensification of symptoms as being a sign that the body’s healing energies have been stimulated. If you are dealing with a chronic illness and you experience a sustained and uncomfortable surge of symptoms after a Reiki treatment, please see your physician or other licensed health care provider for advice.
You can rest assured that Reiki is a safe, non-invasive treatment that can benefit you, even if you have a chronic illness or you are pregnant. I’d be happy to address your individual questions and concerns. Just contact me by clicking here.
